font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">refers to what is now called the &#8216;extraordinary form\u2019 of the Roman Rite: the ancient liturgy,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">completely in Latin, which was used with little variation for many centuries prior to the reforms\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Relatively few Catholics, however, are aware that the \u2018ordinary form\u2019 of the Roman-Rite\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Mass \u2013 that is, the revised, post-conciliar liturgy now celebrated in the vernacular \u2013 can also be\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">celebrated mainly in Latin and with other more traditional options. This is a part of a healthy\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">liturgical pluralism that has deep roots in the traditions of our worldwide Church. As well as\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">incorporating seventeen different Eastern rites, each with its own forms of worship, Catholicism\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">has traditionally included quite a few varieties of the Latin liturgy.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-d935022 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"d935022\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e1fc21e\" data-id=\"e1fc21e\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-04155c8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"04155c8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">But can the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">new\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Mass be offered using Latin? Indeed it can. This option has been\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">offered each Sunday for five years at beautiful and historic St. Mary of Victories Chapel (built\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">1843), just south of the Arch. On hearing this, some Catholics assume it must be a \u201chybrid\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">liturgy: an incongruous mixing-up of the ordinary and extraordinary forms. Not so. On the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">contrary, the new rite (a.k.a. the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Novus Ordo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">) celebrated mainly in Latin could be described as\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">the most \u201cthoroughbred\u201d form of the post-Vatican-II Mass! The Missal used is the latest Latin\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">editio typica<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">\u201d, the original and most authoritative text for the modern liturgy. Published at the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Vatican, it\u2019s not only used quite often by the post-conciliar popes but is also the basis for the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">world\u2019s different vernacular translations.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-be5017a elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"be5017a\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2adfd92\" data-id=\"2adfd92\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9db391f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9db391f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Many Catholics are surprised to learn that the new\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">General Instruction of the Roman\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Missal\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">allows for certain traditional options that are now seldom seen in the U.S. But the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">ordinary form Mass, as celebrated with these options at St. Mary of Victories, is actually very\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">close to the style of worship contemplated by the Fathers of Vatican II when they promulgated\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">the Constitution on the Liturgy,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Sacrosanctum Concilium\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">SC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">) in 1963. They decreed, for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">instance, that Latin was to continue as our main liturgical language (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">SC\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">#36), and did not call for priests to change their location on the sanctuary. (The celebrant traditionally stood in front of the altar during the Eucharistic Prayer, facing the same way as the people.) It was not the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Fathers of Vatican II, but Pope Paul VI some years after the Council, who decided to legitimize\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">the reception of Communion standing and in the hand as well as kneeling and on the tongue\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">(the traditional manner that Benedict XVI, as pope, asked from those receiving Holy\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Communion personally from him). Nor did\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">SC\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">ask for new Eucharistic Prayers in addition to the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">First \u2013 i.e., the ancient \u2018Roman Canon\u2019, the centerpiece of the Roman-Rite Mass. This is very much in line with Benedict\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">XVI\u2019s well-known call for a \u201chermeneutic of continuity\u201d with respect to Vatican II. This meant\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">that he, like all the other post-Vatican II popes, insisted that the Council\u2019s teachings and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">directives are to be understood, explained and implemented in a way that shows forth their\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">harmony and unity with the Church\u2019s great bimillennial heritage of doctrine and worship.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">Along with all other \u2018ordinary form\u2019 Eucharistic celebrations, ours includes the three\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">main reforms deriving from Vatican II. First, there is the much greater selection of Scripture\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">readings now provided in the multi-volume Lectionary. Another is the encouragement of more\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">active participation by the people. So, as in other parishes, lay readers at St. Mary\u2019s proclaim\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">the Scriptures, and, led by our choir under the expert direction of chant scholar Stan Metheny,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">worshippers learn to sing and recite the essential Latin chants, hymns and responses, as SC\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">urges (#54). The third main conciliar reform has been a greater use of the vernacular while also\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 12pt; font-family: lora, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;\" data-mce-mark=\"1\">retaining Latin.
